Welcome!

Welcome to Queer Alabama History, an ongoing effort to preserve the lives and legacies of queer Alabamians. Since 2020, undergraduate and graduate students at the University of Alabama, alongside local community members, have worked to document this vibrant past. Most contributors participated in Queer Southern History, a research seminar offered annually by the University of Alabama history department.

Oral Histories

Browse our collection of oral histories featuring queer citizens of Alabama, with a focus on the western half of the state. Many narrators were central figures in local civil rights struggles. These student-led interviews include full audio recordings, written transcripts, and timestamped guides.

Walking Tour

Follow a self-guided tour of historic queer Tuscaloosa on Clio. Nine stops mark where queer residents gathered and organized, and where they met opposition. Walk it in person or from your screen.
